Animahenasyon 2015

Inspiration, helpful tips and a large helping of local talent; this was what awaited me in this year’s Animahenasyon.

Animahenasyon is a two-day festival that showcases various aspects of the Philippine animation industry. It was held in the SMX Convention Center of SM Aura, located in Taguig, Metro Manila. The event caters to both students and professionals with free workshops and screenings to talks from industry practitioners and there is also a competition for student films.

I went to the second day and got the chance to watch the film screening for student films. There was a lot of variety between the different schools’ submissions. These films were done in 2D, 3D and even stop motion.

The highlight of my attendance was the talk of Mr. Takuya Wada, animation director of Lupin III vs. Detective Conan and more. He started his talk with videos of his work, taking us through his thoughts on each project. He later started doing a demo of anime techniques, offering detailed explanations along the way.

After the demo, he showed his design work, including character designs for animation and costume designs for professional wrestlers. He ended his talk with a game of rock-paper-scissors with the attendees, with the winners receiving an original animation cel from the anime Fist of the North Star, a show that aired almost 30 years ago.

The event was capped off with updates on the state of the Philippine animation industry.
